Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
