A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
